Update August/2018: Promises

So, I’ve suddenly started posting again. A lot has happened in the last 4 or five years. I’ll try to do a quick recap.

First, you know it’s the strangest thing. I actually forgot about this blog for a while. Like, for several years. I got caught up in a bunch of other stuff. It started with me kind of deciding to take a break until i had something interesting to talk about. I was also having a hard time building a relationship with the writing community. (I blame myself.) So, I just stopped. Then when I finally did have things I could’ve been talking about, I’d forgotten all about it.

I don’t want to spend an entire post about everything. I think i should spread it out for both me and my readers, but I’ll get anxiety if it goes on too long. I’ve started a new book. Been working on it for a couple of years. I have over 100 chapters, averaging around 1,000 words per chapter. I realized from reading Dan Brown, that I really like short chapters. As a reader, it makes the book fly by; as the writer, I feel I’m able to slow the story more and focus better without aggravating the anxiety I get when I think I’m not going to finish something.

Anyway, I’m working on this story. I’ve had to take breaks periodically. And I remember a quote from Rick Riordan. “A book is never done, only due.” Part of the reason that I’m not finished is that I’ve got no deadline. I’m literally not accountable to anyone. I just realized that in like the last week or so. The solution is then to make myself accountable.

I’ve started posting on Wattpad with a promise to myself (and any reader I may have) to post a new chapter every Wednesday and Friday. And wouldn’t you know it, certain parts of the story I’d been struggling with are now fixed. Almost instantly. It was amazing. These are things I’d been trying to figure out for two years. As soon as l make myself accountable and have a deadline, magic happens.

This blog, I still didn’t remember this blog until whenever it was I made the first post, I think Monday or Sunday. I thought I’d post here in case anyone still reads this blog, they now know what’s going on. I will keep the same Wednesday, Friday schedule here for the new chapters. They will be as complete as I can make them alone. I do have a couple of friends who’ve offered to help. And they’re really good. But they’ve also got their own personal lives. They do what they can, but maybe they won’t have time before the next chapter is due.

If you’ve read this much, thank you. I’ll endeavor to post more about where I’ve been and what I’ve been doing. I may even post pics from the 2.5 years I was in South Korea.

All Best,

Nadi Abdi
